H42.2407-001 (Albert # 75925)
Schedule TBA, 4 points
COURSE MEETING DATES: August 4 – August 22, in Lima, Peru

Course by Application: instructions follow description.

Offered through the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics (www.hemisphericinstitute.org), this course offers an
introduction to performance and cultural politics in contemporary Peru, centered on an intensive workshop with Peru’s most
important theatre collective, Grupo Cultural Yuyachkani, in their cultural center in Lima.

We explore Andean performance cultures, paying particular attention to the role of the arts in the contemporary human rights
struggle in Peru and the recent work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The course features guest lectures by
leading Peruvian scholars on visual culture, performance, Afroperuvian music, festival performance, and postcolonial theory
and practice in Peru. It also includes an introduction to the stage repertoire of Yuyachkani, a company known for its innovative combination of Andean and European theatrical forms, with a strong commitment to grass-roots community issues, mobilization, and advocacy. Studio classes with Yuyachkani focus on the use of voice, body, mask, and objects in performance composition. NYU students are joined in Lima by students from Hemispheric Institute member institutions, from other US
institutions, and from Peru, Brazil, Mexico, and beyond. Knowledge of Spanish is desirable, but not required. No previous
performance experience is necessary.
